If you fix this, IMO the best way is to add library functions to libgnome
which abstract the functionality (e.g. gnome_get_mem_info()). If you do a
BSD-specific solution, or an app-specific solution, the same problem
exists in every new app and on the many other non-Linux Unix variants.
There is already duplicate code between e.g. the load applet and gtop.

Gnome may as well use its libraries to fix portability problems, so every
app doesn't have to reinvent the wheel...
