gmc & inconsistent archive

I just tried the latest gmc (built fresh from the repository) and found
a minor problem.  I attempted to look at the contents of a compressed
tar file and was treated to a seemingly unending series of dialog boxes
complaining about an inconsistent archive.  I would press the okay
button to dismiss the dialog, and another would appear.  After doing
this twenty or more times, I elected to kill gmc instead.
