As you say later on, if gmedia were CORBAized, one could do that anyway.

I think mailcap isn't good enough for most things. We want the ability to
control the multimedia object (rewind/fast-forward, etc...) from one common
control panel. You can't do that if you invoke an external app. We could ask
the various maintainers of popular "helpers" (xanim, mpg123, timidity) to
provide a remote control interface.
