Haven't looked at the app yet, but you might be re-inventing the wheel.
Xanim [1] is I believe the most comprehensive general-purpose media player
for X11, playing just about every sound/image/video format known to man
(though it doesn't do specialised formats like mods and mids). Mark
Podlipec, the guy who built it/maintains it, is a pretty open guy, he'll
probably co-operate.

What WOULD be nice in GNOME is a front end for everyone's (user-defineable)
favourite player that runs a program based on a file's MIME type. Or
something similar. Could be built into gtk+, perhaps.
