observation with gnome on top of WinNt(!)

the gnome panel is very fine to start as xwin-client for an Windows-NT
X-Server, so i have gimp and word (some people here send me word-97
documents:() .

It does not like the -display convention, but
DISPLAY=mydisplay panel 
works.

So the panel sits fine on the top of the windows-environment. But with
every new icon added the panel slows down and the updates of the icons
flicker.

Btw. how can i hide the panel explicit?

With implicit hiding the panel positions bat when it is first hidden
left or right and then getting back.
