I found that ok and it seems to sort of work.  I also found that copying
gtk.m4 to /usr/lib/aclocal fixed that AM_GTK problem.

I still cannot, without major fiddling, get around the fact that 
gtktty in gnome-libs cannot find gtk, even though the top level aclocal can.
Weird by true!
