This reminds me of an IRC conversation I had with someone regarding
GNUstep and Gnome. The person wondered what people involved with the Gtk
or Gnome projects would think about a GTK "backend" for GNUStep that would
be a replacement for DGS/DPS. I also think they were wondering if anyone
would do it .. ;-) Would this even be possible ? I'm trying to wrap my
head around how glib gtk & GNUStep would tie together.
The argument of the IRC person was that Gnome would then have access to
all the distributed object capabilties of Open/GNUStep and wouldn't have
to reimplement in CORBA as often to do what already can be done. (DO
supposedly will have a CORBA interface too for that matter ...) as for
GNUStep it would get access to Gtk - the most beautiful widget set outside
of a NeXT box :-) There is an existing unfinished (?) X based backend to
GNUStep called NSXKit (I think that's the name) it's a backend that allows
GNUStep to display using xlib calls instead of DPS or DGS. I guess the
need for this exists because DPS isn't free and DGS is too slow to use for
the whole UI of a desktop. (?)
Anway back to Gnome: Would it be useful to have both CORBA and OpenStep
like DO's if something like this were even possible or sensible?
Flame away if I'm just polluting the list - I figured with all the more
focused gnome-* lists a wacky Q like this one wouldn't bother too many
people here :-)

G. Todd
