I can't get the gnome-libs/gnome-hello programs to link

gnome-hello-0-basic.c:28: Undefined symbol `_argp_program_version' referenced from text segment

and I'm having a similar problem with gwp:

ld.so failed: Undefined symbol "_argp_program_version_hook" in gwp:/usr/local/lib/libgnomeui.so.0.0

what do I need to do to resolve this symbol?
