don't check for root ... user might have done a "user" installation of
gnome .. and then he could happily edit the system menus himself

or it might be installed by some trusted user into /usr/local (I know
a lot of machines that have a couple of users that don't have root,
but /usr/local is writable for them, especially in computer labs)
