reflections# cd /usr/local/lib/                                    /usr/include
reflections# mv libpng.a libpngfoo.a                             /usr/local/lib

GOOD NEWS: 
this solved the problem.

BAD NEWS:  
reflections# find -name libpng.a                     /home/tlewis/gnome/cvs/dgs
./png/libpng.a

I find this unfortunate.
