anyway .. if you just want to do interoperability one thing to do would be
to write some source that reads debian,redhat,gnome and kde menus and that
can either give them in kde or gnome format ... for gnome this is the dentry
structure ... all I would have to do is plug your code in and panel would
read all these types of menus ... same goes for kde ...

also one thing for you to consider might also be this ... I need a way to 
figure out if I should reread a particular item or a directory so that 
I can make the menu up to date ...
