Thanks for the tip.  I was running 5.003 and it just did not work.  I
got 5.004.04 and it now works just fine.

You need perl 5.004 or above.
Note that there is version 0.2_03 out and the gnome-perl module
in the gnome cvs has better support for compiling the gnome bits.
