Sure, in the same sense that a bicycle doesn't require a front wheel.
You can ride it, but I wouldn't suggest taking it across town that way.

I don't understand the value of session management.  I suppose that,
if you don't own your own machine, or if you have to enter and exit X
all the time, session management is a good thing.  I've never been led
to use it myself.
