Hi Chiron,
Your intention is quite noble, and it would be great to have you hack
on GNOME.
If you are concerned about a big program, you should take a look at
the TODO list on the web page. Some tasks seem smallish enough for
you.
Another good thing you can do to learn is to take some dumb-terminal
or curses programs and write gnome-compliant programs that invoke
these. Someone write a calculator, and someone wrote an interface to
"find".
To start you could take the various gnome-hello programs and start
adding stuff to them.
I remember a cute curses program I used to use (in the days of
comp.sources.unix and comp.sources.misc) called "vis". It would run a
command repeatedly, refreshing the screen each time. It was great for
running "ps" or "finger" to monitor whatever was happening. A simple
gnome version of this would be useful. (In fact, could someone put it
in the TODO list?)
