Are you talking about a Menu Bar or a Tool Bar, which is usually where
bold buttons, etc get checked and are user visible.

Hey, would it be possible to modify the pointer instead of any menu or
tool bars to indicate the state of text, i.e. map an italicized bold
string that says "Text" under the pointer as it's moved about? Would it
be a good idea as a user hint?
