I think this kind of stuff should be saved for the rewrite of gnome_config

I thinkf or 1.0 ... we could just implement a simple registry ... and
say only one program can write to it (the registry editor proggie) ...
then we don't have problems with file sharing ... except that apps will
need to be restarted to get changes ... but that would be ok for now
