What is cvs get? Is it equivalent to checkout? If so, then what you
want is "cvs update -d", i.e.
(. .ENV-gnome; cvs -z4 update -Pd -rGNOME_STABLE gnome-libs gnome-core)
(the -P removes empty directories too, just good on general principle)
since checkout is not equivalent to update.
