That is the current approach.  People think that typing "gmc" should
never launch two copies of the file manager but contact an existing
one (ie, duplicating the functionality of new-instance into gmc).

Of course, new-instance is much better, because you do not actually
launch gmc, you launch GNOME/FileManager:1.0, which can be any file
manager as long as it implementes that corba interface.
