Re: how can I get gnome back ... please !!

The short answer is, you might be better off waiting until the end of the
week. Today is code freeze day, so everyone is getting their last messy
changes in before they settle down to bugfixes. It will probably be a
couple of days before stuff is settled down enough for bug reports to be
meaningful.

The g_strfreev function is in libglib, try doing the following:
  $ ldd `which panel`
        libgnorba.so.0 => /opt/gnome/lib/libgnorba.so.0 (0x40007000)
        libORBitCosNaming.so.0 => /opt/gnome/lib/libORBitCosNaming.so.0 (0x40011000)
        libORBit.so.0 => /opt/gnome/lib/libORBit.so.0 (0x4001b000)
        libIIOP.so.0 => /opt/gnome/lib/libIIOP.so.0 (0x4008d000)
        libORBitutil.so.0 => /opt/gnome/lib/libORBitutil.so.0 (0x40096000)
        libgnomeui.so.0 => /opt/gnome/lib/libgnomeui.so.0 (0x40099000)
        libart_lgpl.so.0 => /opt/gnome/lib/libart_lgpl.so.0 (0x4014e000)
        libgdk_imlib.so.1 => /opt/gnome/lib/libgdk_imlib.so.1 (0x4015c000)
        libjpeg.so.62 => /usr/lib/libjpeg.so.62 (0x40187000)
        libtiff.so.3 => /usr/lib/libtiff.so.3 (0x401a5000)
        libungif.so.3 => /usr/lib/libungif.so.3 (0x401d0000)
        libpng.so.2 => /usr/lib/libpng.so.2 (0x401d7000)
        libz.so.1 => /usr/lib/libz.so.1 (0x401f1000)
        libSM.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libSM.so.6 (0x40200000)
        libICE.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libICE.so.6 (0x40208000)
        libgtk-1.1.so.6 => /opt/gnome/lib/libgtk-1.1.so.6 (0x4021c000)
        libgdk-1.1.so.6 => /opt/gnome/lib/libgdk-1.1.so.6 (0x4033d000)
        libgmodule-1.1.so.6 => /opt/gnome/lib/libgmodule-1.1.so.6 (0x40370000)
        libXext.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libXext.so.6 (0x40374000)
        libX11.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so.6 (0x4037f000)
        libm.so.6 => /lib/libm.so.6 (0x40416000)
        libgnome.so.0 => /opt/gnome/lib/libgnome.so.0 (0x4042f000)
        libgnomesupport.so.0 => /opt/gnome/lib/libgnomesupport.so.0 (0x40443000)
        libdb.so.2 => /lib/libdb.so.2 (0x4044b000)
        libglib-1.1.so.6 => /opt/gnome/lib/libglib-1.1.so.6 (0x40459000)
        libdl.so.2 => /lib/libdl.so.2 (0x40479000)
        libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0x4047c000)
        /lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x00000000)

If a library is missing you would see a line like:
        libglib-1.1.so.3 => not found

Then you know what may be misinstalled.

Best of Luck,
-Gleef

PS: Don't forget to try ldconfig
