rogue cdplayer_applet

I somehow managed to acquire a rogue cdplayer_applet running, which has
grabbed control of /dev/hdc, and thus won't let me eject the cd that's
there. I know I can reboot, but I'd rather not, if possible - are there any
ways to kill the damn thing, besides kill -9 et all, which I've already tried?
