cvs -z3 checkout -rthemes-2 -d gtk+-themes gtk+
cd gtk+-themes
./autogen.sh
make install
cd themes
./autogen.sh
make install
cd ../gtk
less testgtkrc

(read this file, note the "engine" keyword)

that should be all you need..
