libpng question

Which version of the following should one be using for a recent CVS
checkout of gnome:
libpng
libgr-progs
other, similar programs
and where can one find them? ftp.gnome.org has some crufty rpm's.
I'm getting confused on what ancillary libraries are required for gnome.
