A wheel lets you scroll up and down. The middle button in a "scroll mode"
would let you scroll up, down, left, right, and diagonally.

Sorry, It was a rant. I'm sick of seeing those three little letters on a GNOME

Want a taste of eight-way scrolling, use the gimp. Get scrollbars on your pic
a drag the middle(2nd) button to scroll around the picture. It is so much more
useful a wheel.
