I don't like this because it means asking the user a question whose
meaning (and answer) he probably won't understand.  (I'm only talking
about first-time users here.  Power users already know how to change
their wm.)

I think it's better just to pick a sensible default.  Presumably the
default menus for this wm would be set up to let you start a different
wm.  But this is a quality-of-implementation issue for the system
builder.
