It sounds like the PNG backend image loader for GdkPixbuf is not working 
on your system.  I don't know enough about your system to be able to 
help diagnose why (I would have thought that gtk+ would fail to build 
before hand, since it also wants to convert some PNG images with 
gdk-pixbuf-csource).
