I figured it out:
/etc/pam.d/xdm now has the options
auth required pam_gnome_keyring.so auto_start
session optional pam_gnome_keyring.so
and I deleted
password optional pam_gnome_keyring.so
from /etc/pam.d/passwd
I still start xfce4 with GNOME services son startup, and now it unlocks
my default keyring :-)

Hello!
I have problems automatically unlocking the default keyring with xdm and
xfce4 on FreeBSD.
My /etc/pam.d/xdm has the lines:
auth optional pam_gnome_keyring.so
session optional pam_gnome_keyring.so auto_start
and my /etc/pam.d/passwd has:
password optional pam_gnome_keyring.so
and I launch GNOME services on startup of xfce4.
