Well, i've got this list subscribed since it's beginnings and i have
definitely lost any hope about any cooperation between KDE and GNOME.
Apart from such fundamental things like a common drag'n'drop mechanism
i think the differences between both projects have proven to be just
too large to be vanquished.
Personally i've lost quite some interest in mostly both projects
unless they still don't find any way of cooperation. If they don't,
both will have been in vain at least to some degree. Too bad.
Hopefully the GNUstep project doesn't loose the impetus it has gained
in the last weeks/months. I advise everybody who got weary of the
KDE/GNOME antics to rather invest their valuable time in GNUstep.
Here is a list of resources:
"http://www.gnustep.org/" - Severely outdated and needs someone to
keep it up to date with the actual status
quo of the current project.
"news:gnu.gnustep.discuss" - This is the main public discussion forum
for the GNUstep developers and future
users. The core developers have started
to regularily post progress reports and
finallythe first screen shots have become
available. GNUstep will be great! :-)
"discuss-gnustep@gnu.org" - The main mailing list of the project. It
is gated into usenet and is therefore
meant to be up to in sync with the
newsgroup mentioned above. But my own
experience shows that the gating's
reliability is rather questionable.
For subscription send an e-mail to
"discuss-gnustep-request@gnu.org"
containing the word "subcribe" in the
message body.
"http://www3.pair.com/mccarthy/nextstep/" - Since GNUstep is an
implementation of OPENSTEP (which itself
is based on the great NeXTStep
application and development framework
including it's ergonomic GUI concepts),
the screenshots and discussions of the
NeXT user interface shown at this URL
apply as well to the upcoming GNUstep
desktop environment.
"ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/gnustep/snap/" - Contains the latest official
monthly snapshot of the current devel
tree. They are automatically generated
and don't warrant any functionality.
This is not meant for end users but for
developers.
"ftp://ietpd1.sowi.uni-mainz.de/pub/gnustep/dailysnap/" - Anybody
interested in participating in the
GNUstep project can download the daily
snapshots from the recently available CVS
server as mirrored here and use them as a
basis for starting their own CVS mirror.
"http://developer.apple.com/techpubs/rhapsody/ObjectiveC/" - GNUstep
is implemented using the Objective C
language, for which you'll find a nice
beginner's tutorial under this URL.
Objective C bindings to toolkits like
gtk+ have recently begun to emerge.
"ftp://ftp.gtk.org/pub/objc-gtkkit/" - Objective C bindings to gtk+.
I'll keep subscribed to this list in the hope to see some more signs
of life here.
Thanks, P. *8^)
