This is better, but still not optimal, because people are not used to check for
file NEW_RELEASES.  Can this file be displayed, when visiting :
https://download.gnome.org/sources/startup-notification/ without opening it?  I
mean an index.html or alike, that displays apart from the available
subdirectories, also the indication, that these are outdated?

Besides, for
https://download.gnome.org/sources/startup-notification/NEW_RELEASES the server
does not communicate any Content-Type: .
