git 1.7.2.1 on the client side doesn't fix this, can you please reopen the bug?

$ git --version
git version 1.7.2.1
$ git clone 'git://git.gnome.org/gtk+'

fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly
$ git clone 'git://git.gnome.org/gtk%2b'
