I thought that cyrillic was the default and latin the alternative, while
reading wikipedia:
"A Latin alphabet was officially approved by the government of
Nizhne-Volzhskiy Kray in 1932, but it was never used:"

You are right. In 1937, all Erzya linguists were executed on charges of separatism. Since then, there is officially only the Cyrillic alphabet.
Now there are two informal Alphabet - phonetic and simple with the added letters for compatibility. The second almost copies Estonian extended alphabet. We plan to use a simple alphabet and cyrillic.
