Re: What can Git do for translators?

Hi all,

I would suggest that GNOME create a tree specifically for translation.

gnome-po.git should be nice.

Then translator only need to clone the tree related to translation and start translating.

I often need the source code to check the context or test my translation, not you?
I don't understand, how you intend to keep this special tree in sync with the different project branches? If you need a tarball of all po files, it's already possible in DL.

There's no real differences for translators in using a VCS or a DVCS (we don't maintain branches or merge from other). It's easy to write a wrapper over any DVCS to checkout/clone/branch and another one to commit/push to fit the translator needs.

Maybe someone will take the time to post on this list, the commands to checkout, translate and commit the translation for each DVCS of the survey?

Stephane

PS: sometimes I also generates the mo file and copy it in a devel distribution (such as Rawhide) to see the result.
