When trying to add gettext support I was facing the problem, that the autoconf macros installed with gettextize absolutely do not tolerate non-recursive automake setups: They insist on finding the "po" folder in the SUBDIRS variable of the toplevel Makefile.am. This completely breaks non-recursive automake setups, as SUBDIRS are visited before any local rules are evaluated. Didn't investigate this further yet.
