How to handle 'y' and 'n' questions from a terminal window

Hi:

In Orca, we have a terminal-based configuration utility that asks yes 
and no questions.  Is there a standard l10n mechanism or convention we 
can use to ask these types of questions and handle the response?

An example question is:

Enable echo by word?  Enter y or n:
