I would prefer the latter option. And perhaps even say:
/* translators: Only translate the part after the | */
Otherwise I might think the | needs to be included.
The sentence is still abiguous though, so even better would be:
/* translators: Only translate the part after the '|' the part before
the '|' is to be skipped */
or
/* translators: The translated message should only contain the
translation of the part after the '|' */
updated Dutch gtk+ has been sent to the maintainer.
