That looks like xgettext bug: they should definitelly not be combined,
not because of calling different functions, but because of the
problems you notice, and because plural forms are differently
represented in PO and MO files (their "key" is <singular
string>+\0+<plural string>).
This is something that needs to be looked at and considered, but I
lack the time to do it right away.
