I'd like to begin by contributing some information on the way Novell manages it's language quality, terminology and language styleguides.  Obviously lots to talk about and I am a complete newbie in the Open Source space so please bear with me....
 
Language Translation @ Novell
-------------------------------
The group in Dublin (30 people) are primarily made of engineering (software, documentation, testing) and project management.  We work closely with the development groups to ensure that the approach taken to localise their products is consistent, timely and cost effective across each of the product groups.  We achieve scalability through the use of an outsource process where we have built up close relationships with localisation partners who have had long relationships with Novell and know our products particularly well.  Of course, they work with many organisations other than Novell and we capitalise on their breadth of experience in all fields of translation (IT, Automotive, Marketing, Medical etc)


Why Ireland?
---------------
Ireland is the largest exporter of software in the world primarily because most of the multi-national companies have located their international divisions here.  These organisations include Novell, Sun, Oracle, Microsoft, AOL and many, many more.  There are over 5000 people employed directly in the localisation industry.   Although driven by a competitive corporation tax rate, the availability of a well educated and internionally savvy work force and a favourable window of overlap in timezones (from California to Tokyo) make Ireland rather compelling (ok! I'm biased!!!)

Language Quality Assurance
---------------------------------------------
We operate and language quality assurance model that has 4 full time Novell staff engaged as overall language process supervisors.  These folks are located in-country (France, Spain, Brazil, Germany) - other languages are covered using in-country partners, but our own staff monitor the overall language process.  The  group ensure that all current known changes to languages are monitored, terminology changes integrated with our body of knowledge, and education and training provided to our translators.  Their educational backgrounds are in linguistic sciences and collectively they have many person-years of practical language experience in the software translation field.  We assess and measure language quality using a number of internally developed techniqes but we use the LISA language quality standard as the primary guide. Some of our tools
----------------------
We manage our software terminology (glossaries really) through www.novellglossaries.com (login guest, pwd guest).  Software translation is performed through a set of internally developed localisation tools known collectively as NILE (Novell Integrated Localisation Environment).  I'll talk about the software tools in future mails.  Styleguides are currently on an internal system 

Documentation, online help, web content, legal materials and marketing communications materials are translated using a commerical translation memory solution.

A Note on standards
-----------------------------
We try to streamline our processes using a number of standards.  Perhaps the most exciting of these is XLIFF (XML Localisation Interchange File Format) which is an XML spec designed as a container for localisable material that many tools can now process. Hello, good to hear from you! I suspect Novell and the GTP both have
things they can learn from each other. Some socialising among GTP
members happens on the #gnome-i18n IRC channel on the Freenode network.
