The situation is (or should be):
intltool gettext result
=================================
<= 0.26 < 0.12 no problem, but UTF-8 strings won't be extracted
<= 0.26 >= 0.12 dies there
>= 0.27 < 0.12 Same as if older intltool is used
>= 0.27 >= 0.12 Extracts UTF-8 string successfully
