make update-po fails in gnome-applets, gnome-utils

i'm using gettext 0.10.38, and when i try to make update-po in
gnome-applets/po and gnome-utils/po i get some errors:

    zh_CN.po.old:281: invalid multibyte sequence
    zh_CN.po.old:282: end-of-line within string

and more of the same.

is this a problem with my gettext, or are the .po files messed up? (if
the latter, can someone fix them?)
