Yes, I know. This used to be a problem, since some developers were using
older versions of gettext and insisted that including non-ASCII
characters in msgids worked, which only was true for the older
gettexts...

Ok. intltool-update probably also needs to be patched. Could you please
add your findings to the http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=99005
