I'm wondering why you don't call ./autogen.sh like everybody else?
./autogen.sh implies gettextize and thus it will copy your locally
installed gettext files to the intl directory.

At least, this is how it works for me.

OTOH, the current setup within the GNOME CVS is flawed: Either force
every maintainer to use the gettext version of the CVS or don't provide
it at all...  Anyway, even if it is flawed it work quite well :)
