How to display Chinese in gnome panel?

Hi,
    I'm a newbie.
    I have some problem on display Chinese in gnome
panel, the encoding seems to be right, but the display
is not chinese font.
    The icons in desktop can show chinese correctly,
so I think the problem is the font does not fit the
panel size. How can I change it? What's the
relationship between X fonts and the gnome display?
    Any help is appreciated.
