Better, but will fail if source dir != compile dir.

I don't see a good reason why we should break the well known gettext
setup (cf. the gettext manual).  A better README in po/ might help

As long as nobody takes care about developers.gnome.org we should stay
away from those changes.  GNONE has enough undocumented internals.
