It's even bad to have "" translatable since that string is overloaded and
used by gettext to store information about the translation.

xgettext should refuse to even accept "" as a string marked for
translation.  The problem with "" have happened a couple of times in the
preferences for sawfish. The empty string is translated to a string with
hundreds of characters and the control-center window changes its witdh to
something like 3000 pixels to fit the whole string as a single row :-)
