Hi,
This is my first mail to this list and I thought I might introduce
myself.
I haven't done much GNOME stuff yet on a regular basis, but I'm a
Swedish translator in the Translation Project. Now you know all there is
to know about me. Well, maybe not.

Yes. The Translation Project uses "8bit", and hence, I don't see a
reason not to use that, when that convention has already been
established elsewhere.

The translation project uses "ISO-8859-X" in all capital letters. I
think this is how the standard's name should be properly spelled (btw,
the Translation Project page where the use of this is mentioned is
http://www.iro.umontreal.ca/contrib/po/HTML/translators.html, but you
have to scroll down a bit).

Because of this, my recommendation is "ISO-8859-X".
