I run GNOME 2.4 on libxml2 2.6.0 without troubles so far, yes.
The couple of compatibility bugs which have been found in the 1.5 month
it took to build 2.6.0 have been fixed immediately, In practice it should
work, maybe with the exception of handling DocBook SGML docs, which
I think should have been fixed by GNOME 2.4 anyway.
