landing parallel install fixes

Hi,

I'm planning to land a bunch of parallel install fixes in CVS today
(Wednesday). I need to fix all modules at once. I'll also fix any
remaining fallout from the Pango font changes if required.  The
commits will probably be this afternoon or evening sometime.

If something breaks afterward, just send me mail and complain, and
I'll investigate.
