It shouldn't be a GNOME API it should be a API that can be used by any
UNIX desktop environment whether that is KDE, XCFE, GNOME etc.  It just
makes things more complicated with each project implementing hteir own
stuff.

There is at least one person at Ximian I believe who came from the mozilla
