GNOME performance [Was: the same page]

A lot has been said about GNOME's performance recently - GTK+ 2.0 doesn't
help us a lot, because the new features do incur a performance cost.

Perhaps optimisation should be a major focus of the 2.2 release?

In the release roadmap on dotplan, we have 2.0.x releases, regarded as
bugfix releases, and the major 2.2 release. If the 2.0.x releases (note
plural!) include porting fixes - removing deprecated API calls, and using
the platform to fullest extent possible - we could certainly look more
closely at performance for 2.2.

So, whilst this is something we ought to put at the back of our minds with a
major release coming up, some simple guides to stracing/profiling GNOME
applications and pinpointing performance problems may come in handy. Anyone
have pointers or documentation already available for contributors to look
at?

Thanks,

- Jeff
