Yes, the problem is that even if there is visual feedback, the user
won't notice it simply because he doesn't look at it -- he expects the
feedback to be the same anyway. Thanks for pointing that out.

Yes! I think GNOME should put more effort into making it easier for
the user to organize his desktop himself, instead of developing
features that organize the desktop for the user. You don't want your
colleagues or parents to clean up your real-world desktop, why do we
build virtual desktops that do exactly that?
We can, of course, add such features later for those who want
them. But I think that those features should be optional and run only
when explicitly activated by the user. Such features will be added
anyway (just look at the amount of silly shareware and freeware
add-ons available for Windows), but I think the user should explicitly
turn them on ("I want this"), not be required to turn them of ("I'm
too stupid for this").
