GnomeDateEdit Object...

I need some help on the Gnome DAteEdit Object...
1.   What I want to do: I want to change the format of the date displayed,
currently it displays "mm/dd/yyyy" and i wish "dd-mm-yy" or "dd-mmm-yyyy" ??

2.   How do i initialise data to the variable of type "time_t "??

3.   How do i extract date and how do i set date to this object??
